Although QuickBooks gives you the best options to do your accounting, this software has its limitations. It does not assign account numbers to your accounts when you set them up. You have to do it on your own. The best that QuickBooks can do is to assign a numbering system for you or you may choose your own numbering system.
In order for you to use these account numbers you will have to set it up first or assign account number to your Chart of Accounts. By then, you will allow QuickBooks to do the job for you.
If you accept the numbering system proposed by QuickBooks, you may already use them. But if you want to change the account numbers to your own numbering scheme, create the accounts you want to use, by opening the Edit Account Window and clicking on the name of the account you want to change.
Since QuickBooks will not give out the account numbers unless you ask for it, you just have to turn it on if you want to use it or turn it off whenever you feel like it.
First thing you should do to turn it on is to open the preferences window and open the edit menu. Choose Preferences. When the Preferences window opens click on the Accounting Preferences tab and choose the Company Preferences. Then the options will appear. Turn on the Account Numbering Feature by checking the box to Use Account Numbers. Click OK to close the window.
